Improving Rural Livelihoods through Community Forest Management

2005

ENVIROCARE implemented a forest conservation and livelihood project in Kilimanjaro, Tanga and Coast Regions of Tanzania, supported by the National Forest Programme Facility through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The project focused on improving rural livelihoods by strengthening community awareness and the capacity of stakeholders, including women, to sustainably manage and conserve forest resources.
What We Did
ENVIROCARE worked with communities, civil society organisations (CSOs), private sector actors and local government authorities to strengthen their knowledge and skills in forest resource management. The project used participatory training, discussions, learning materials and practical demonstrations.
Key areas included community forest management, energy-saving stoves, improved charcoal production, small-scale forest-based enterprises and income-generating activities using non-wood forest products. Environmental and land rights, legal literacy, human rights and gender issues were also integrated into the project.
