Who we are

Environmental Human Rights Care and Gender Organization (ENVIROCARE) is a Tanzanian non-governmental, non-partisan, and non-profit organization committed to advancing environmental justice, human rights, gender equality, and sustainable livelihoods. Established in 1993, ENVIROCARE has over three decades of experience empowering communities, strengthening civil society, and promoting inclusive and sustainable development.

The organization is registered under the NGOs Act No. 24 of 2002 with Registration No. 00NGO/R1/00264. Our headquarters are located in Makongo Juu, Goba Road, Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, with a field office in Sanya Juu, Siha District - Kilimanjaro Region.

Our Story

Since its establishment, ENVIROCARE has grown into one of Tanzania's respected civil society organizations, recognized for its participatory and community-driven approaches to development. We work alongside communities, government institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners to improve livelihoods while promoting environmental sustainability, social justice, and gender equality.

Our work is guided by the belief that lasting development is achieved when people have the knowledge, confidence, and opportunity to influence decisions affecting their lives.

Our impact can best be summarized as: Changing people's lives by empowering them to influence social, economic, political, and environmental change.

The mission of ENVIROCARE is to impart knowledge and skills to society to influence a change of attitude, behaviour and practices to bring about environmental justice and human rights care through a participatory and holistic approach.

Our Approach

Community-Based Participatory Approach

Communities are at the heart of everything we do. From project design to implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, we actively involve community members to strengthen local ownership and ensure long-term sustainability.

We believe every individual has the right to participate in decisions affecting their lives. Particular attention is given to women, youth, and marginalized groups whose voices are often underrepresented in development processes.

Holistic Development Approach

Environmental degradation, poverty, inequality, and human rights are interconnected challenges. ENVIROCARE addresses these issues through integrated programming that links environmental conservation with social justice, gender equality, governance, access to justice, and sustainable livelihoods.

By addressing the root causes of vulnerability, we create lasting and inclusive development outcomes.

Ma'Afrika Award

ENVIROCARE's Executive Director, Loyce Lema, received the prestigious Ma'Afrika Award, recognizing outstanding African women whose dedication has transformed communities through sustainable development and social leadership.

Egmont Trust Award

In 2014, Loyce Lema received the Egmont Trust "Most Inspiring Individual" Award in recognition of her exceptional leadership in establishing ENVIROCARE and improving the lives of communities affected by HIV and AIDS.

Women Direct (WD)

ENVIROCARE is an active member of Women Direct (WD), a regional network promoting women's leadership and participation in decision-making across Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

ENVIROCARE successfully convened a **Regional Forum** that brought together key stakeholders to discuss strengthening the meaningful participation of women and youth in Tanzania’s democratic processes.

The forum brought together representatives from Local Government Authorities (LGAs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), media, religious organizations, political parties, and university students, creating a platform for inclusive dialogue, collaboration, and shared commitment to advancing democratic governance.

Strengthening Environmental Collaboration Across East Africa 🌍🤝

ENVIROCARE has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the “Rwanda Association of Professional Environmental Practitioners (RAPEP)”, marking a significant milestone towards strengthening environmental conservation, professionalism, and sustainable development across the East African countries.

Through this strategic partnership, ENVIROCARE and RAPEP will collaborate in:
✅ Strengthening environmental professionalism and standards among practitioners.
✅ Sharing knowledge, expertise, and experiences on environmental conservation and human rights.
✅ Coordinating joint advocacy initiatives for environmental policies at regional level.
✅ Enhancing the capacity of institutions, environmental experts, and other stakeholders.

The MoU was signed at the ENVIROCARE Headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and witnessed by senior representatives from both institutions.

The event was attended by Jean Paul Ndaisabiye, Chairperson of RAPEP; Joseph Msami, Consultant on Partnerships and Collaboration; Adv. Michael Mushi, Board Member of ENVIROCARE; and Amos Mbwambo, Programs Director at ENVIROCARE.

Prior to the signing ceremony, leaders from both organisations engaged in constructive professional discussions on opportunities, challenges, and strategic approaches to advancing environmental protection and sustainability in Tanzania, Rwanda, and the wider East African region.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment by ENVIROCARE and RAPEP to promote environmental management, strengthen regional cooperation, and contribute to a sustainable future for communities across East Africa.
