Promote Good Forest Governance at Community levels in Siha and Kisarawe Districts

January - December 2009

From January to December 2009, ENVIROCARE implemented a project to promote good forest governance in Siha and Kisarawe Districts. The project worked with forest-dependent communities in Donyomurua Village in Siha and Zegero, Mafizi and Mtakuja villages in Kisarawe. It focused on strengthening community participation, accountability, transparency and sustainable management of forest resources.
What We Did
ENVIROCARE reviewed existing forest governance materials and developed a practical training manual covering good governance, community-based forest management, advocacy, conflict management and participatory forest management. The manual was tested with communities and stakeholders, refined and 1,000 copies were produced and distributed. Training and capacity building were also provided to strengthen communities' knowledge and skills in managing their forests.
Project Impact
The project increased community awareness of good forest governance and strengthened collaboration between ENVIROCARE and local authorities. Communities showed readiness to develop forest management plans, while women’s participation and community involvement in forest decision-making were emphasized. The project also highlighted the importance of alternative livelihoods in reducing pressure on forest resources.
