Waste Management for Environmental Protection and Livelihood Improvement
Location: Kibangu–Makuburi Ward, Kinondoni Municipality (Pilot Project); Kinondoni, Sinza, Ubungo, Kawe, and Kunduchi Wards, Kinondoni Municipality, Dar es Salaam.
Duration: : December 2014 – March 2015 (Pilot Project); November 2015 – November 2016 (Scale-up Programme).
With financial support from the National Bank of Commerce (NBC), ENVIROCARE implemented this project to promote sustainable waste management as a pathway to environmental protection and improved youth livelihoods. Following the success of a three-month pilot project in Kibangu–Makuburi Ward, the initiative was expanded into a one-year programme targeting five wards in Kinondoni Municipality. The project enhanced community awareness on proper waste management, strengthened youth entrepreneurship and leadership skills, promoted waste recycling and urban farming, established demonstration plots, and supported income-generating activities such as mushroom production, sack gardening, charcoal making, and kitchen waste management. The initiative also promoted community participation through awareness campaigns, stakeholder engagement, and environmental clean-up activities.
Target Group

Pilot Project: Approximately 400 households in Kibangu–Makuburi Ward.

Scale-up Programme: Approximately 2,000 youths from Kinondoni, Sinza, Ubungo, Kawe, and Kunduchi Wards.
